Another striking difference is the distinctive professional culture, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed through a different lens than in my home country.

Part-time employment connected these two realms for me, assisting in financial management and offering insight into the UK market, particularly from a marketing and customer experience angle. My initial and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing department. Producing content for a prestigious university was an extraordinary and positively transformative experience.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team was a fantasy come true, generating content that reached over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. This role entailed storytelling and sharing the student journey, grasping institutional communication, and recognizing the tone and authenticity that connects with various audiences.

This position provided unforeseen opportunities, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have transpired without embracing that initial chance. The MORA team is friendly, supportive, and offers a creative environment for experimentation. If you have a passion for storytelling and engaging content projects, this is among the top part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I uncovered mine through Imperial’s internal job portals on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during the Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the roles and convey your enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Employers value dependability, initiative, and amiability, not solely past experience.

Balancing work and study

Striking a balance between work and classes necessitates organization. I arranged shifts when my class schedule was less demanding. Prioritize your degree, but a strategically chosen part-time job can enhance your academic experience. My marketing coursework felt more valuable when applied in actual jobs.

Exploring different part-time jobs

During my Master’s program, I experimented with various roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique insights. Hospitality experience taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure. These skills have remained with me beyond my time at the café.

Financial independence and visa rules

Part-time jobs were vital for financial stability, addressing rent, transportation, and living costs, while enabling modest savings. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, balancing earnings with downtime. It is crucial to comply with visa regulations, as exceeding work limits can impact visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, so always verify conditions before accepting a position.

Final thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial transcended mere monetary gain. It was about enhancing confidence, acquiring professionalism within a different culture, and engaging with diverse individuals. Every position, from crafting coffee to developing digital campaigns, provides significant lessons for future endeavors.

If you’re commencing your Master’s and pondering how to navigate finances while acquiring real-world exposure and experience, consider seeking part-time roles early on. A simple “yes” today could open doors to much greater experiences.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, Part-time job, <

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an international student quickly unveils the elevated living expenses, encompassing rent, groceries, travel, and tuition fees.
