Following that is the awareness of the unique professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are perceived in a manner distinct from my home country.

For me, part-time employment bridged these gaps, aiding in financial management and providing insights into the UK market, particularly in terms of marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing division. Being compensated to develop content for a prestigious university felt surreal and significantly enriched my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, crafting content that reached over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media platforms. It extended beyond mere filming or writing; it encompassed storytelling, conveying the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that strikes a chord with varied audiences.

This position presented unforeseen opportunities, like interviewing prominent figures such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These experiences were made possible by accepting that initial opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and offers a creative environment to explore. If you appreciate storytelling and wish to involve yourself in exciting content initiatives, this is among the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous methods to uncover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered my position through Imperial’s internal job listings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and during career fairs in Welcome Week. The secret lies in customizing your CV for the role and displaying enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Most part-time employers prioritize dependability, initiative, and friendliness, rather than just experience.

Balancing work and study

Successfully balancing work and academic commitments calls for careful planning. I scheduled shifts during lighter class weeks only. Keep in mind that your degree is paramount, yet a well-selected part-time position can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework gained greater significance when applied in practical roles.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I experimented with various jobs, including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique lessons. My time in hospitality taught me vital customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and remaining composed under duress. These abilities have remained with me long after leaving the café.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were invaluable, allowing me to cover rent, transportation, and living costs, with some savings accumulated. As an international student, I was permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during breaks, allowing me to balance income and downtime.

It’s essential to follow visa guidelines, as exceeding work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, so it’s prudent to verify conditions before taking any job.

Final thoughts

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it transcended simply earning money. It was about fostering confidence, learning professionalism within a new cultural context, and engaging with a diverse array of individuals. Whether brewing coffee or orchestrating digital campaigns, every role imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and are curious about managing your finances while gaining real-world experience, I recommend seeking part-time positions early. A minor “yes” today could unlock doors to much greater opportunities.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/" rel

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London as an international student, the first thing that hits you is how swiftly costs add up, from rent and food to transportation and tuition.
