The professional atmosphere feels notably different as well, encompassing new methods of work, communication, and creative interpretation.

For me, part-time positions served as a connection between these realms, enabling me to manage my finances and gain insights into the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and most cherished role was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated for generating content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Producing content viewed by over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms made collaborating with the MORA team a fantasy come true. It entailed storytelling and sharing the student narrative, grasping institutional communication nuances, and understanding tone and authenticity for varied audiences.

This position provided unforeseen opportunities, including interviewing prominent figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of these experiences would have materialized without accepting that first opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming and supportive, offering creative space to innovate. If you are passionate about storytelling and seek engaging content endeavors, this is one of the premier part-time roles at Imperial.

Discovering part-time opportunities

There are numerous methods to uncover part-time employment at Imperial. I landed mine through Imperial’s internal job portals on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV writing, mock interviews, and job hunting. Employers look for not only experience but also dependability, initiative, and approachability.

Managing work and study

Successfully balancing work and studies necessitates organization. I accepted shifts only when my class timetable was less demanding. Your degree should be the main focus, but a well-suited part-time job can enhance your learning experience. My marketing coursework gained greater significance when applied in tangible employment settings.

Sampling various part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s studies, I explored several roles including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted something distinct. Work in hospitality cultivated genuine customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain composed under pressure. These abilities have remained with me long after leaving the café.

Financial autonomy and visa regulations

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to pay for rent, travel, and daily expenses, and even set aside some savings. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term and full-time during breaks, allowing for a balance between earnings and downtime.

It is crucial to adhere to visa stipulations, as surpassing work hours may impact your visa status. Imperial provides clear guidelines, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting employment.

Concluding remarks

My part-time experience at Imperial was more than just financial gain. It fostered self-assurance, instilled professionalism in an unfamiliar culture, and connected me with a variety of individuals. Whether it was preparing coffee or developing digital campaigns, every job imparts invaluable lessons for the future.

If you are beginning your Master’s journey and contemplating how to handle finances while acquiring real-world experience, seek out part-time positions early on. A small “yes” today could lead to much larger opportunities.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon relocating to London as an international student, you quickly observe how costs add up, from housing and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
