The next realization involves the unique professional atmosphere, highlighting differences in work, communication styles, and creative perceptions compared to your home country.

For me, part-time employment connected these two realms, assisting me in financial management while gaining insights into the UK market from a marketing and customer experience standpoint. My inaugural and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing division. Being compensated to generate content for a prestigious university was extraordinary and significantly enriched my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team, crafting content that reached over 700,000 viewers on Imperial’s social media platforms, was a fantasy realized. This role involved narrating stories and showcasing the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that appeals to varied audiences.

This opportunity brought unforeseen experiences, including interviews with public figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These moments would not have materialized without accepting that first chance. The MORA team is supportive, nurturing, and offers creative freedom for experimentation. If storytelling and exciting content projects spark your interest, this is one of the premier part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

Numerous avenues exist for discovering part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine via Imperial’s internal job platforms on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV to align with the role and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV creation, mock interviews, and job searches. Most part-time employers prioritize reliability, proactivity, and friendliness over mere experience.

Balancing work and study

Effectively managing work and classes necessitates careful planning. I accepted shifts only when my class commitments were lighter. Your degree must take precedence, yet a well-suited part-time position can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework felt significantly more relevant when applied to real-world jobs.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored a variety of roles including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique lessons. Experience in hospitality developed my understanding of genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure. The skills and insights gained have persisted well beyond the café setting.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial perspective, part-time positions were crucial, covering rent, transportation, and living costs, while allowing for some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, striking a balance between income and relaxation.

Adhering to visa regulations is essential, as exceeding work limits can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and double-checking conditions is prudent before accepting any job.

Final thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial transcended mere monetary gain. It revolved around building self-assurance, learning professionalism within a new culture, and engaging with a diverse cohort. Whether preparing coffee or designing digital campaigns, every position imparts critical lessons for the future.

If you’re commencing your Master’s and contemplating how to balance finances while gaining practical experience, consider exploring part-time roles early. The small “yes” you give today may unlock vast opportunities tomorrow.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When you first arrive in London as an international student, the rapid accumulation of expenses hits you, covering everything from accommodation and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
