Additionally, you’ll discover that the professional environment is markedly different, with new methods of working, communicating, and defining creativity in contrast to your homeland.

For me, part-time positions served as a connection between these two realms, aiding me in financial management and gaining insights into the UK market, particularly in terms of marketing and customer experience. My initial and preferred position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s core marketing team. It felt surreal to receive compensation for generating content for a prestigious university, and the experience greatly influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content viewed by over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy come true. It revolved around storytelling, showcasing the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.

This position presented unforeseen opportunities, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have been achievable had I not accepted that initial opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and encourages creative experimentation. If you have a passion for storytelling and wish to engage in exciting content projects, this is among the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Locating part-time positions

Numerous avenues exist to seek part-time employment at Imperial. I discovered mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Ensure your CV is customized for the position you’re applying for and exhibit enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service offers assistance with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Keep in mind, most employers look for reliability, initiative, and approachability, not solely experience.

Managing work and study

Successfully balancing work and classes necessitates strategic planning. I accepted shifts only when my class timetable was less demanding. Your academic program should take precedence, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework became more significant when it was linked to real-world roles.

Trying out various part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored several roles such as server, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted something valuable. Work in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and remaining composed under pressure. These skills have remained with me beyond the café environment.

Financial freedom and visa regulations

On the financial front, part-time jobs were invaluable. I managed to cover rent, transportation, and living costs while even saving a little. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term periods and full-time throughout holidays, striking a balance between income and rest.

It’s vital to adhere to visa regulations, as surpassing work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting a position.

Concluding thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial transcended mere monetary gain. It involved building confidence, acquiring professionalism within a new cultural context, and connecting with diverse individuals. Whether crafting coffee or developing digital campaigns, each position imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and contemplating how to handle finances while gaining practical exposure and experience, I suggest early exploration of part-time opportunities. A slight “yes” today could unfold into much greater experiences than you ever envisioned.

For more insights about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon relocating to London as an international student, you’ll soon observe how costs add up, from housing and food to transportation and tuition fees.
