The professional environment also appears significantly different, introducing new approaches to working, communicating, and understanding creativity compared to your home country.

Part-time employment bridged these realms for me, aiding in financial management and insights into the UK market, especially in marketing and customer experience. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to produce content for a leading university was surreal and positively shaped my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content for over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media was a fantasy realization. It encompassed storytelling and showcasing the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and grasping tones that appeal to varied audiences.

This position presented extraordinary opportunities, including interviews with notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. It all began with a simple “yes” to a minor opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, motivating, and offers a creative environment. If you are passionate about storytelling and engaging content projects, this is among the premier part-time positions at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

Numerous avenues exist to secure part-time employment at Imperial. I utilized Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and attended career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for each position and convey enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service offers assistance with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Employers are in search of reliability, initiative, and amiability, rather than just experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Juggling work and academics necessitates organization. I planned shifts around lighter class loads. Your studies must remain the priority, but a well-selected part-time position can enrich your education. My marketing coursework became more impactful when I could apply it to actual jobs.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

Throughout my Master’s, I explored various roles including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each provided distinct lessons. The hospitality industry taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and composure under stress. These skills have continued to benefit me beyond the café environment.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

From a financial perspective, part-time positions were essential. I managed to cover rent, travel, living costs, and save a little. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, striking a balance between income and downtime.

It’s critical to follow visa regulations, as surpassing work hour limits can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers guidance, so it’s prudent to check conditions prior to accepting positions.

**Final thoughts**

My part-time experience at Imperial was about more than just earning money. It fostered confidence, instilled professionalism in a new culture, and connected me with a diverse range of individuals. Whether it was brewing coffee or crafting digital campaigns, every position provided significant lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and aim to manage your finances while acquiring real-world exposure, consider exploring part-time positions early on. A small “yes” today could lead to greater experiences than you anticipate.

To learn more about my experiences, [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Upon arriving in London as an international student, you swiftly observe how costs such as rent, groceries, travel, and tuition can add up.
