The subsequent insight is the unique professional atmosphere, where work, interaction, and innovation are viewed differently compared to one’s home country.

Part-time employment connected these two realms for me, assisting in managing finances and grasping the UK market, especially in marketing and customer experience. My initial and preferred position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing department. Being compensated for producing content for a prestigious university was surreal and had a positive impact on my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Contributing to the team and generating content for over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy. It entailed crafting narratives and sharing the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and discerning the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.

This position opened doors to unexpected experiences, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty, all stemming from my willingness to seize a small chance. The MORA team is encouraging and fosters creativity. If you are passionate about storytelling and engaging in captivating content projects, this is one of the premier part-time jobs at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time positions at Imperial. I secured mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and during career fairs in Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you are targeting and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can help with CV writing, interview practice, and job hunting. Employers value reliability, proactivity, and approachability, not solely past experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Managing work alongside classes calls for effective planning. I scheduled my shifts during periods when my course load was lighter. Your degree should always take precedence, but a well-chosen part-time role can enhance your academic pursuits. My marketing classes seemed more applicable when linked to real-world roles.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

Throughout my Master’s, I experimented with a range of positions such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each experience imparted distinct lessons. Work in hospitality taught genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and the ability to maintain composure under stress. These competencies have remained with me beyond any café setting.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

On a financial note, part-time jobs were essential. They accounted for rent, travel, and living costs, with a bit left for savings. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, allowing for a balance between income and rest. It’s vital to adhere to visa regulations, as surpassing work limits can impact visa status. Imperial offers guidance, so it’s advisable to verify conditions prior to accepting any position.

**Final thoughts**

Looking back on my part-time journey at Imperial, it was more than just earning a paycheck. It cultivated confidence, imparted professionalism in a different culture, and forged connections with a variety of individuals. Whether serving coffee or designing digital campaigns, each role provides invaluable lessons for the future.

If you are about to begin your Master’s and are curious about managing finances while acquiring real-world experience, seek out part-time positions early. A simple “yes” today could open the door to far richer experiences than you might have anticipated.

To gain further insight into my experiences, [read my Imperial story](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/).

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Upon relocating to London as an international student, the first thing that strikes you is how rapidly costs increase, from rent and groceries to travel and tuition fees.
