The professional atmosphere also appears remarkably different, with distinct methods of working, communicating, and understanding creativity compared to your home country.

Part-time employment served as my link between these two realms, aiding me in managing my budget and grasping the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing department. Being compensated to produce content for a top university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy come true. It entailed crafting narratives and sharing the student experience, learning about institutional communication, and recognizing the tone and authenticity required for varied audiences.

This position presented extraordinary opportunities, such as interviewing prominent figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. Accepting that initial opportunity was pivotal. The MORA team is supportive, encouraging, and offers a creative space for experimentation. If you have a passion for storytelling and seek engaging content projects, this is one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

There are numerous methods to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I came across mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position and display enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV preparation, mock interviews, and job searches. Employers value reliability, proactivity, and approachability, not just experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Managing work and study necessitates planning. I arranged my shifts during periods when my class workload was lighter. Your degree remains the priority, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework felt more relevant when applied to real-world roles.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored various jobs such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each experience imparted unique lessons. Work in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These skills continue to be useful beyond the café setting.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

From a financial perspective, part-time jobs were essential, covering rent, travel, and living costs, with some savings. International students may work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during holidays, balancing income and downtime. Following visa regulations is critical, as exceeding work limits can impact your visa status. Imperial offers guidance, and it’s advisable to verify conditions before accepting roles.

**Final thoughts**

Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was about more than just earning a paycheck. It fostered confidence, taught professionalism in a new culture, and connected me with a diverse array of individuals. Whether crafting coffee or developing digital campaigns, every position offers valuable takeaways for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and pondering how to manage finances while gaining practical experience, seek part-time roles early on. A small “yes” today could lead to significantly greater experiences than you anticipate.

To discover more about my journey, [read my Imperial story](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/).

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Upon relocating to London as an overseas student, you swiftly realize how costs mount quickly, from rent and groceries to transportation and tuition.
