The professional environment also seems different, with fresh ways of working, communicating, and viewing creativity.

Part-time jobs connected these two realms for me, aiding in financial management and providing insights into the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer experience. My initial and most enjoyable position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. It felt extraordinary to produce content for a prestigious university, positively influencing my entire year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, supporting the group and generating content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. This role encompassed storytelling and sharing the student experience, honing institutional communication skills, and grasping tone and authenticity for varied audiences.

This position opened up remarkable opportunities, such as interviewing public figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These experiences were only possible by seizing that initial chance. The MORA team is welcoming and supportive, offering a creative environment for experimentation. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to participate in captivating content projects, this is one of the finest part-time roles at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time work while studying at Imperial. I located my job through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV to fit the role and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job hunting. Employers look for reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Balancing employment and classes necessitates organization. I arranged shifts when my class workload was lighter. Your degree should come first, but a well-chosen part-time job can enrich your academic experience. My marketing courses felt more impactful when applied in real-world contexts.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

Throughout my Master’s, I experimented with various roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each job imparted unique lessons. Hospitality roles taught genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure. These skills continue to be invaluable beyond the café setting.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

Part-time positions were essential financially, covering rent, travel, and living costs, while allowing for some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours weekly during the term and full-time during breaks, balancing income with rest. Adhering to visa regulations is crucial, as exceeding work limits can impact your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, so always verify conditions before taking a job.

**Final thoughts**

My part-time experience at Imperial transcended mere monetary gain. It fostered confidence, taught professionalism in a new cultural context, and connected me with diverse individuals. Whether crafting coffee or developing digital campaigns, each position imparts essential lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and contemplating how to manage finances while gaining practical experience, look into part-time roles early on. A simple “yes” today could lead to greater opportunities than you can envision.

To discover more about my experiences, [read my Imperial story](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/).

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Relocating to London as an international student, you soon recognize how costs such as rent, groceries, travel, and tuition can add up.
