The next awareness is the unique professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently than they are in your home country.

For me, part-time jobs connected these two aspects, aiding me in managing finances and gaining insights into the UK market, especially in terms of marketing and customer experience. My first and most enjoyable position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing team at Imperial. Getting paid to produce content for a top university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

**Joining as a MORA Content Creator**

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, where I assisted and crafted content viewed by over 700,000 individuals through Imperial’s social media platforms. It entailed storytelling and sharing the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that strikes a chord with various audiences.

This position brought unexpected experiences, like interviewing notable personalities such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These encounters would not have occurred without accepting that initial chance. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and offers creative freedom for exploration. If you’re passionate about storytelling and want to dive into captivating content projects, this is one of the best part-time positions at Imperial.

**Locating part-time jobs**

There are numerous methods to discover part-time work while studying at Imperial. I secured my position through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and job fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you’re targeting and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job hunting. Keep in mind that employers value reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.

**Managing work and studies**

Effectively balancing work and coursework necessitates planning. I accepted shifts only when my class timetable was less demanding. Your degree remains the main focus, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your education. For example, my marketing assignments became more meaningful when I applied them in real-life jobs.

**Trying various part-time roles**

During my Master’s program, I explored different jobs such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique lessons. Working in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and how to stay composed under pressure. These insights and skills have remained with me beyond the café backdrop.

**Financial autonomy and visa regulations**

Financially, part-time jobs were vital. I was able to cover rent, travel, and living costs, and even save a little. As an international student, I could work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during breaks, allowing me to manage both income and downtime.

It’s crucial to comply with visa regulations, as working beyond permitted hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers guidance on this, and it’s advisable to verify conditions before accepting any position.

**Concluding thoughts**

Looking back at my part-time experience at Imperial, it was about more than just earning a wage. It was an opportunity to build confidence, learn professionalism in a new cultural setting, and connect with a diverse range of people. Whether making coffee or developing digital campaigns, every job has imparted valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and pondering how to manage finances while gaining hands-on experience, I suggest looking into part-time roles early on. A small “yes” today might open doors to experiences that exceed your expectations.

To read more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, Part-time job, postgraduate student life

Tagged part-time work, postgraduate work, student jobs, working as a student, working as an international student

When you get to London as an international student, you’ll soon realize how quickly costs can pile up, from housing and food to transportation and tuition fees.
