The workplace atmosphere also appears quite different, with new methods of operating, communicating, and interpreting creativity compared to what you’re accustomed to at home.

Part-time positions acted as a link between these two realms for me, assisting in financial management and providing perspectives on the UK market, particularly in terms of marketing and customer experience. My first and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. Getting paid to produce content for a prestigious university was incredible, and the experience significantly enhanced my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, as I supported them and produced content viewed by over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. It involved weaving narratives and sharing the student journey, acquiring knowledge of institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that connects with varied audiences.

This position opened doors to unforeseen experiences, such as interviewing prominent individuals like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have occurred without my willingness to embrace that initial opportunity. The MORA team is friendly, supportive, and encourages creative exploration. If you have a passion for storytelling and wish to engage in compelling content projects, this is among the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

Numerous avenues exist for discovering part-time work while studying at Imperial. I located mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs held during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific position you’re applying to and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV crafting, interview practice, and job hunting. Employers typically look for dependability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Juggling work and classes necessitates organization. I opted for shifts only when my class timetable was less demanding. Your degree should remain the priority, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing assignments felt more relevant when connected to actual job experiences.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

During my Master’s program, I explored various positions including waiter, event organizer, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted distinct lessons. Working in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These competencies have remained with me beyond the café environment.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to cover rent, travel, and daily expenses while also managing to save a bit. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during breaks, facilitating a balance between income and rest.

It’s crucial to comply with visa conditions, as exceeding permitted work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear advice, and it’s prudent to verify conditions prior to accepting any positions.

**Final thoughts**

Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was more than simply earning a paycheck. It cultivated confidence, imparted professionalism in a new culture, and connected me with a diverse range of individuals. Whether making coffee or developing digital campaigns, each role provides valuable insights for the future.

If you’re just beginning your Master’s and contemplating how to handle finances while obtaining practical experience, start exploring part-time roles early. A small affirmative response today might lead to experiences beyond your wildest dreams.

To discover more about my journey, [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Upon relocating to London as an international student, you soon realize how quickly expenses can mount, encompassing everything from rent and food to transportation and tuition fees.
