Another revelation is the unique professional culture, featuring different methods of working, communicating, and viewing creativity in comparison to one’s home country.

Part-time employment connected these realms for me, aiding in financial management and gaining insights into the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to produce content for a top university felt surreal and positively impacted my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Assisting the team and generating content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media was a fantasy come true. It entailed narrating stories and sharing the student journey, learning institutional communication dynamics, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.

This position provided incredible experiences, such as interviewing prominent figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These encounters were only possible by seizing that initial chance. The MORA team is friendly, supportive, and fosters a creative environment to innovate. If storytelling excites you and you’re eager to partake in engaging content projects, this stands out as one of the top part-time roles at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

Numerous avenues exist to secure part-time employment while pursuing studies at Imperial. I discovered mine via Imperial’s internal job platforms on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for each application and demonstrate genuine enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Employers look for dependability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Striking a balance between work and classes necessitates organization. I planned my shifts when my course load was lighter. Bear in mind, your degree takes precedence, but a strategically chosen part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework became more significant when applied in actual work environments.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

Throughout my Master’s program, I experimented with a variety of roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted distinct lessons. Hospitality jobs instilled essential customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and composure under stress. These abilities have transcended beyond the café scene.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

From a financial perspective, part-time jobs proved essential. I managed to cover rent, travel, and living costs, and even save a little. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term times and full-time in holidays, balancing my income with rest.

It is crucial to observe visa regulations, as exceeding work limits can impact your visa status. Imperial offers clear advice, and it’s prudent to verify the conditions before accepting any positions.

**Final thoughts**

Looking back on my part-time journey at Imperial, it encompassed much more than just earning money. It fostered confidence, imparted professionalism in an unfamiliar culture, and connected me with a variety of individuals. Whether serving coffee or producing digital campaigns, every role provides important lessons for the future.

If you’re commencing your Master’s and considering how to handle finances while acquiring practical experience, I suggest you start investigating part-time roles early. A simple “yes” today may unlock opportunities for extraordinary experiences.

To discover more about my journey, [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Relocating to London as an overseas student swiftly highlights the significant living expenses, encompassing rent, groceries, travel, and tuition fees.
