The second epiphany is the unique work culture, where labor, communication, and creativity are viewed differently than in your home country.

For me, part-time positions connected these two realms, aiding me in financial management while gaining insights into the UK market, particularly from a marketing and customer experience standpoint. My initial and favorite job was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. It felt surreal to be compensated for creating content for one of the globe’s top universities, and the experience significantly influenced my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Assisting the team and crafting content that reached over 700,000 people across Imperial’s social media platforms made collaborating with the MORA team a dream come true. It wasn’t merely about filming or writing – it revolved around storytelling, reflecting student experiences, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonates with a variety of audiences.

This role opened doors I never expected, including interviewing high-profile figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have materialized without embracing that tiny opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and encourages creative exploration. If storytelling excites you and you wish to engage in captivating content initiatives, this is among the best part-time opportunities at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

Numerous paths exist for finding part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. The essential part is customizing your CV for the specific role and demonstrating enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service offers assistance with CVs, mock interviews, and job hunting. Remember, most part-time employers look for reliability, proactivity, and friendliness, not solely experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Juggling work and classes necessitates organization. I only accepted shifts when my class schedule was lighter. Your degree remains the top priority, but a strategically chosen part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework gained greater relevance when I applied those concepts in real-world positions.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

During my Master’s program, I experimented with various roles including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted something distinct. Hospitality work taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These lessons and skills have lingered with me beyond the café environment.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

Financially, my part-time jobs were a crucial support. I managed rent, travel, and living costs and even saved a little. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, allowing me to balance income and rest.

It’s vital to adhere strictly to visa regulations, as exceeding work hours might jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance on this, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting any employment.

**Final thoughts**

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was more than just a source of income. It was about fostering confidence, learning professionalism in a different culture, and engaging with a diverse range of individuals. Whether pouring coffee or crafting digital campaigns, every job imparts invaluable lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and pondering how to manage finances while gaining practical exposure and experience, I encourage you to explore part-time roles early. The small “yes” you offer today could lead to experiences far greater than you envision.

To discover more about my experiences, [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

When you reach London as an overseas student, the first thing that strikes you is how fast expenses pile up, from rent and groceries to transport and tuition fees.
