The following observation is the remarkable professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are understood differently than in your home country.

For me, part-time employment served as a bridge between these worlds, aiding in financial management and offering perspectives on the UK market, particularly in the realms of marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing division. Being compensated to generate content for a prestigious university was astonishing and had a positive impact on my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Assisting the team and producing content for over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media channels was a fantasy. It involved narrating stories and showcasing the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and grasping tones and authenticity that connect with a wide range of audiences.

This position unveiled unforeseen possibilities, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. It all stemmed from accepting a minor opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, motivating, and fosters creative freedom. If you have a passion for storytelling and are seeking captivating content projects, this is among the top part-time positions at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

There are numerous ways to discover part-time employment at Imperial. I secured my position through Imperial’s internal job databases on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and during career fairs throughout Welcome Week. Customize your CV for each application and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service is available to assist with CV crafting, interview practice, and job hunting. Employers value dependability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely prior experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Balancing employment and academics necessitates organization. I arranged my shifts for when my course load was lighter. Your degree remains the primary focus, yet a well-selected part-time role can enhance your studies. My marketing classes became more significant when applied in real-world contexts.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

Throughout my Master’s, I explored various positions such as server, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each experience imparted its own lesson. Working in hospitality taught genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure. These insights reach beyond the café environment.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

From a financial standpoint, part-time positions were crucial. I covered rent, travel costs, and living expenses while also saving money. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks, ensuring a balance between earning and resting.

Following visa rules is vital, as working beyond the permitted hours can impact your visa status. Imperial provides straightforward instructions, and it’s prudent to verify conditions prior to accepting any job offers.

**Final thoughts**

Looking back on my part-time journey at Imperial, it extended beyond just earning money. It fostered confidence, imparted professionalism in a new cultural setting, and connected me with varied individuals. Whether serving coffee or crafting digital campaigns, each role presents valuable lessons for life ahead.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and curious about managing finances while gaining practical experience, seek part-time roles early. A simple “yes” today may open doors to experiences that exceed your expectations.

To discover more about my experiences, [read my Imperial story](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/).

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Upon your arrival in London as an international scholar, you’ll swiftly recognize how quickly expenses can pile up, from housing and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
