The second insight is the unique professional ethos, where employment, communication, and creativity are viewed quite differently compared to your home country.

For me, part-time positions bridged these two realms, assisting me in managing my budget and gaining insight into the UK market, particularly from a marketing and customer experience angle. My inaugural and cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing division at Imperial. Being compensated to craft content for a prestigious university was surreal and significantly influenced my year.

**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**

Contributing to the team and generating content for more than 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy come true. It required weaving narratives and conveying the student experience, grasping institutional communication, and identifying the tone and authenticity that resonates with a variety of audiences.

This position presented astonishing opportunities, such as interviewing personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have come to fruition without embracing that initial opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and offers a creative environment to explore. If storytelling excites you and you’re eager to participate in engaging content initiatives, this is one of the premier part-time positions at Imperial.

**Finding part-time opportunities**

Numerous avenues exist for securing part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine through Imperial’s internal job listings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career events during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you’re applying for and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV preparation, practice interviews, and job searches. Most part-time employers prioritize dependability, initiative, and friendliness over mere experience.

**Balancing work and study**

Juggling work and academic responsibilities necessitates strategic planning. I accepted shifts only when my class timetable was less demanding. Your degree is the primary focus, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your educational journey. My marketing studies felt significantly more relevant when I encountered those concepts in actual work situations.

**Exploring different part-time jobs**

During my Master’s program, I explored various roles including waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each experience offered unique lessons. Hospitality roles imparted real customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to maintain composure in high-pressure scenarios. These lessons and skills continue to be advantageous well beyond the café environment.

**Financial independence and visa rules**

From a financial perspective, part-time jobs were essential, covering rental costs, travel, and living expenses, with some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during breaks, successfully balancing income and downtime. It’s crucial to comply with visa rules, as exceeding work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting employment.

**Final thoughts**

Looking back on my part-time journey at Imperial, it transcended mere financial gain. It was an opportunity to foster confidence, understand professionalism in a new cultural context, and engage with a diverse mix of individuals. Whether brewing coffee or creating digital marketing campaigns, each position imparted valuable insights for the future.

If you are embarking on your Master’s journey and pondering how to manage finances while gaining practical experience, consider part-time positions early on. A simple “yes” today could unveil far greater opportunities than you ever envisioned.

To learn more about my experiences, [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By [Guest Blogger](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/author/bloggers/)

Categorised under [Careers](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/), [Part-time job](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/), [postgraduate student life](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/postgraduate-student-life/)

Tagged [part-time work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/part-time-work/), [postgraduate work](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/postgraduate-work/), [student jobs](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/student-jobs/), [working as a student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-a-student/), [working as an international student](https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/working-as-an-international-student/)

Upon relocating to London as an international scholar, the first observation is the rapid accumulation of costs, from housing and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
