Stepping foot in London for the first time, the city struck me as vast, noisy, swift, and daunting. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before starting at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of your new life in the city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First Order of Business: Secure Housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent expensive hotel stays by securing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime spots get booked fast. Aim for a location near campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times to morning classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative Matters: Key Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, address these tasks swiftly:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 International students need a cost-effective way to send money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Get a UK SIM card right away to ensure you have data for navigation.<\/li>\n

    Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Intelligent Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    In my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Prevent this mistake by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to see the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be intense, especially at first. Having a comfort zone aids in acclimating \u2013 mine is a park close to my home. I visit it daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is another place where I relax weekly while catching a movie.<\/p>\n

    Locate your own comfort spots, such as a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to seek solace and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Spot the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining options.<\/p>\n

    Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from friendly detours.<\/p>\n
