Upon arriving in London for the first time, I was struck by its sheer size and intensity. The city buzzed with noise and activity, leaving me uncertain of where to start with only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand. If you\u2019re about to embark on this journey, relax. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in settling down and embracing your new life in London before commencing your studies at Imperial.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re touching down a few weeks early or right before the semester starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had found upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First: find housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your housing in advance. I got lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone, as the best selections vanish quickly. Try to locate accommodation near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long morning travel times.<\/p>\n

Key administrative tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, focus on these essential tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Handling money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • Obtaining a UK SIM card \u2013 make sure you have data for navigation. Get a UK SIM card and data shortly after you arrive.<\/li>\n
  • Establishing a bank account \u2013 some banks need a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday expenses and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Collecting your student ID \u2013 this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student deals. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The significance of the first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your university experience. It\u2019s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies that align with your interests.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re feeling shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I made some of my closest friendships during random campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week shapes your entire university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel cheaply on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Strolling remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Initially, London can feel emotionally taxing. Identifying a spot to unwind is beneficial \u2013 mine is a park close to my home where I relax daily. Another is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I watch movies weekly to de-stress.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own favorite places, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll visit often around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before beginning student life at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores usually charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t work well when it\u2019s windy.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they lead to the best stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a typical feeling at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.<\/p>\n
