Stepping foot in London for the first time felt like a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your time at Imperial begins, so you can relish your new life in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks prior or just before the term starts, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had on my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things foremost: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone, as the better choices vanish quickly. Aim to settle near your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Life essentials: taking care of the key necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, focus on these essential tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Managing your finances \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy method to transfer money from your home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • Acquiring a UK SIM card \u2013 vital for navigation and keeping in touch. Get one soon after you land.<\/li>\n
  • Opening a bank account \u2013 some banks may need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. A bank account is essential for daily transactions and part-time employment.<\/li>\n
  • Obtaining your student ID card \u2013 it allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student deals. Make sure to collect it promptly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s the time you\u2019ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re timid, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I found lifelong friends during campus tours and society exhibitions. Your first week shapes your overall university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable experience but somewhat chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to soak in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be intense, especially at first. Having a place of comfort helps \u2013 mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. Another spot is the O2, just a short 10-minute trip away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.<\/p>\n

    Seek out your own comfort zones, like a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can chill and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Find nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Discover iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a classic red double-decker bus, and roam freely. Some of your best experiences will stem from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pieces of advice before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t hold up well in windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they make for excellent memories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it’s common at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything mapped out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself when I commenced at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
