When I reached London, the city seemed vast. It was noisy, energetic, and somewhat intimidating. With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I felt uncertain about where to start. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can fully embrace the experience of being new in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had been given when I first landed.<\/p>\n

First Thing: Secure Your Housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent spending hundreds of pounds each night on a hotel by booking your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime options are quickly taken! Try to secure a place close to your campus or at least near a dependable Tube line \u2013 early morning lectures are challenging if you\u2019re over an hour away.<\/p>\n

Life Admin: Sorting Out Essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, several essentials need to be handled promptly:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, you\u2019ll require a trustworthy and cost-effective method to receive funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut saved me from unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Acquiring a UK SIM Card \u2013 Without data, navigating will be tough, which is far from ideal in an unfamiliar area or country! Obtain a UK SIM card and data immediately after you land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Opening a Bank Account \u2013 While some banks may need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Open a bank account for everyday transactions and to receive payments for part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Obtaining Your Student ID Card \u2013 This provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts at eateries and shops. Collect it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student life. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and to register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you’re timid, make an effort to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and at society booths. Your first week sets the foundation for your entire university experience.<\/p>\n

          Smart Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic yet unforgettable \u2013 don\u2019t replicate my experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains the best method to experience the city and its culture. London has countless hidden treasures that you\u2019ll uncover by wandering.<\/p>\n

          Locate Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Having a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s the park close to my home. I visit daily to unwind and regroup. My second comfort area is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I watch movies weekly to relax.<\/p>\n

          Discover your own spots, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to provide solace in the vast city. These areas for relaxation and regrouping are more beneficial than you may realize.<\/p>\n

          Discover the City!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred locations for food or coffee.<\/p>\n

          Explore famous attractions. Dedicate weekends to uncovering the city. Visit free museums. Ride a red double-decker bus to enjoy the view. Stroll aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will be created when you get slightly lost!<\/p>\n

          Final Advice Before Diving Into Imperial Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops typically charge for single-use options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
