Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about my starting point. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, fret not. Here are some tips to assist you in settling down in London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just before the semester begins, here is the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by sorting out your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that, as the prime options get snapped up quickly. Try to reside close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels for early classes.

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary basics

As soon as you reach London, tackle these fundamentals without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away to ensure you have data for navigation.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students, vital for everyday transactions and part-time job income.

Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it promptly.

Your first week at Imperial is crucial

The initial week at Imperial is key to your student experience. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join the ones that catch your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, push yourself to get involved. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society showcases. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a wonderful way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting place aids – mine is a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute distance, is another venue I frequent weekly to relax with a film.

Identify your own comforting places, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside seat. These locations are priceless for relaxation and rejuvenation.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequently visit near campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee joints.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and stroll aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

Get a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against wind.

Embrace unique events – they provide great anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the outset.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<footer class="imp

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting with its immense scale and rapid tempo.
