Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling with activity. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt a little lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of your new city life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the start of term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I would have had when I first got here.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Skip the costly hotel stays by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t, as the prime locations fill up fast. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to shorten your travel time for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Make sure to handle these essentials right after you arrive in London:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy, economical way to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Open an account for everyday use and receiving part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance in shaping your student life. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-run clubs and societies, and engage in activities that spark your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you’re an introvert, challenge yourself to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This initial week lays the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London, not quite grasping the Tube or bus systems. It was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid my mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on both the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the best method to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. Uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfortable spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the start. Seek out a comforting place, such as a park, caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge. I have my own spots including a local park and the O2, where I relax weekly with a movie.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, discover free museums, ride one of the red double-decker buses, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your best adventures will come from wandering aimlessly!<\/p>\n

    Final recommendations before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Use a reusable bag \u2013 many stores charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas struggle against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Attend unique events \u2013 they can lead to wonderful tales.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already in a better position than I was when I embarked on my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start crafting your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
