Stepping into London for the first time was a whirlwind. The city appeared vast, booming, and energetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to kick off. If you’re on the verge of this experience, relax. Here\u2019s some guidance to ease your transition into London life before you start at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive several weeks ahead or just prior to the term, here are the tips I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

First off: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To avoid costly hotel fees, organize your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the optimal choices vanish quickly. Seek a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels to early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative duties: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • UK SIM card \u2013 data access is vital for navigating a new environment. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Bank account \u2013 some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly towards students. Establish an account for daily usage and part-time job remuneration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Student ID card \u2013 this is crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies and get involved in those that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I did, and I found close friends during campus tours and society stalls. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube and buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

          Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to spot is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s a nearby park. I visit daily to unwind. My second choice is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.<\/p>\n

          Identify your comfort spots, like a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and reset.<\/p>\n

          And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee locations.<\/p>\n

          Check out iconic sites, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and roam spontaneously. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

          Final advice before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n
            \n
          • Purchase a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are inadequate in windy conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Be open to unique events \u2013 they create great memories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone does at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
