The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to set off on a similar adventure, relax. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before beginning your studies at Imperial, allowing you to embrace the novelty of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re arriving several weeks in advance or just prior to the term commencing, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First things first: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To bypass pricey hotel rates, book your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone, as the prime options disappear quickly! Seek a residence close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line\u2014early morning classes are challenging if you live more than an hour away.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon your arrival in London, there are several essentials to address:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, you\u2019ll need a dependable method to send money from your home country. Services such as Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 having data is essential for navigating a new environment. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan immediately upon arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 some banks necessitate a UK address; however, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open a bank account for everyday transactions and any part-time work you may undertake.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this is vital for gaining access to campus buildings, the library, and benefiting from student discounts. Collect your student ID card as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The first week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your initial week at Imperial is key to your student experience. It\u2019s the perfect opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that catch your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you tend to be shy, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships while touring the campus and visiting society stalls. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my initial week, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable but chaotic experience\u2014don\u2019t replicate my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to use the Tube and buses more affordably.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally taxing, especially in the beginning. Having a comforting spot is beneficial\u2014for me, it\u2019s the park near my home. I visit daily to unwind and recharge. My second refuge is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly to relax.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own places, such as a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to rejuvenate and reset.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And don\u2019t forget to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with your surroundings near campus and home. Locate the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee places.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting a little lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective in windy weather.<\/li>\n<li>Engage in unique events \u2013 they create excellent stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone feels that way initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I arrived at Imperial.
