Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt somewhat lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re landing weeks in advance or just moments before the term commences, here are the insights I wished I\u2019d had when I first arrived.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel lodging by arranging accommodation beforehand. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as prime options disappear quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid long travel times for early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Admin tasks: settling the essential matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student deals. Collect it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your overall student life. It\u2019s when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-driven clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I found some of my dearest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    <p During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Sidestep this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to make Tube and bus travel affordable. Walking remains an excellent method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing, especially at the start. Identifying a comfort zone can help \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I take time to breathe and regroup. Another place is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movie outings to decompress. Seek out your own spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And be sure to discover new places!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with your new surroundings near campus and your residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your best experiences will arise from wandering aimlessly!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Grab a reusable bag \u2013 shops typically charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas fail in windy situations.<\/li>\n
    • Join unusual events \u2013 they lead to unforgettable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I entered Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and start weaving your London tale one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
