Landing in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt massive, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain of where to go. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, don’t fret. Here’s how to adapt to life in London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to savor your new city adventure.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just in time for classes, here\u2019s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.<\/p>\n

Secure a place to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotels by sorting accommodation ahead of time. I got lucky, but others may not. The prime spots tend to fill up fast! Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube route to sidestep long commutes to morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: key items to arrange<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, promptly handle these essential tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to move funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 connectivity is vital for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data package soon after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for day-to-day expenses and part-time job income.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 it allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The first week at Imperial is significant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is essential. You’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society events. This week will shape your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers through London. It was an unforgettable experience but rather hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount to travel affordably. However, walking remains the premier way to relish the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your go-to spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be a lot to handle. Having a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. My second refuge is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies each week. Identify your own spots, whether it’s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside, where you can decompress and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Wander the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and home. Identify your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee places. Explore iconic landmarks, visit complimentary museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for panoramic views. Some of your fondest memories will arise from slight detours.<\/p>\n

    Closing advice before beginning your Imperial student journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops typically impose charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often fall short against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they yield the most entertaining stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it’s perfectly normal at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There\u2019s no need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your journey in London one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
