The atmosphere was loud and fast-paced, leaving me uncertain about where to start with just a suitcase and Google Maps. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there&#8217;s no need to stress. Here\u2019s my guidance for acclimating to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, so you can fully embrace the new city experience.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re getting in early or right before term starts, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but many others are not, as the top choices get booked swiftly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Managing essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you settle in London, tackle these essential tasks without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy, economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer competitive exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one quickly to ensure you have access to data for navigation in an unfamiliar area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 while some banks may ask for a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this provides access to campus facilities, the library, and various student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your first week at Imperial is important<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The initial week at Imperial is crucial for shaping your student experience. It\u2019s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that interest you.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you tend to be shy, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I made close friends during campus tours and society sign-up events. The first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mastering London transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube and bus systems, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. While it was an adventure, it was also chaotic. Don&#8217;t repeat my error. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for budget-friendly travel.<\/p>\n<p>Walking is still the best means to soak in the city&#8217;s culture and discover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel emotionally overwhelming. Having a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. My other favorite spot is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch films weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own comforting locales, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These areas are essential for relaxation and regeneration.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get to know the areas surrounding campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee venues.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks. Spend weekends checking out the city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus for fantastic views, and stroll without a plan. Some of your best memories will stem from wandering aimlessly.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final advice before immersing in Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren&#8217;t effective against strong winds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Participate in unique events \u2013 they provide great narratives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it&#8217;s completely normal initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already further ahead than I was when I began at Imperial.
