If you are on the verge of undertaking a similar adventure, there&#8217;s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London life prior to your commencement at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban experience.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether you arrive weeks early or just before the semester begins, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received upon my entry.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First and foremost: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prevent the hefty expenses of hotel accommodations by arranging a place to live in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the top choices disappear swiftly. Strive to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes to early lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative essentials: handling the basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you land in London, promptly tackle these essential tasks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 International students require an affordable method for transferring funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 Data is essential for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 This is vital for utilizing campus facilities, libraries, and attaining student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The initial week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week at Imperial is key for your student experience. It\u2019s the moment to meet roommates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that capture your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you feel timid, endeavor to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your inaugural week sets the precedent for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In my initial week, I was baffled by the Tube and buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Sidestep my error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to reduce Tube and bus fares.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be a lot to handle, especially at first. Identifying a comforting place is beneficial \u2013 my refuge is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another venue where I relax with a film.<\/p>\n<p>Find your own spots of comfort, whether it&#8217;s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee locations.<\/p>\n<p>Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, ride a double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best adventures will stem from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final recommendations before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas struggle against the wind.<\/li>\n<li>Engage in unique events \u2013 they foster memorable stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You aren\u2019t expected to have everything sorted from day one. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial.
