Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city seemed vast, noisy, and dynamic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re about to go through this, don\u2019t fret. Here are some tips to help you adjust before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to make the most of your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here\u2019s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Prioritize finding accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotels by securing a place to stay ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that advantage. The best spots get taken quickly! Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to keep your commute to morning lectures short.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: must-do’s<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, address these key tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one right away to avoid being stranded without data in a new city.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are speedy and cater to students. You’ll need an account for everyday transactions and part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and benefitting from student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your kickoff week at Imperial is indispensable for your student experience. It\u2019s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Sign up for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you are reserved, make an effort to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week sets the precedent for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: smart travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    In my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card for reduced Tube and bus fares, and apply for the 18+ discount.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the finest way to soak in the city and its culture. You\u2019ll uncover hidden treasures by strolling around.<\/p>\n

    Identify your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. Mine is a park near my residence where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the nearby O2, where I catch movies weekly to de-stress.<\/p>\n

    Explore your own comfort locations, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These spots can provide relaxation and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n

    Make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas around campus and your home that you\u2019ll frequently visit. Locate your nearby supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.<\/p>\n

    Check out well-known landmarks. Dedicate your weekends to exploring the city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and meander around without a specific agenda. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before immersing in Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don’t hold up in windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they create memorable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you’re feeling disoriented \u2013 that\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
