Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed enormous, noisy, and fast-paced. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing this situation, there’s no need to fret. Here are some pointers to assist you in acclimating to London prior to beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban experience.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you’re arriving several weeks in advance or just right before the term commences, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I would have received upon getting here.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Save on pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the top choices disappear rapidly. Try to find a place in close proximity to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials: getting everything in order<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, focus on these essential tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 if you’re an international student, seek out a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut present favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one promptly to guarantee you have data for navigation in a new locale.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 certain banks depend on a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. You will require an account for everyday transactions and part-time job considerations.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is critical. You’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and get involved in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you feel introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I formed some of my best friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your opening week sets the groundwork for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Traveling around London: be smart<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic method to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comforting spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be psychologically intense. Having a comforting location is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, just a ten-minute journey away, is also a preferred spot for catching a film.<\/p>\n

    Locate your own havens, be it a cafe, a bookshop, or a bench by the riverside, to refresh and rejuvenate.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around your campus and residence. Identify your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Explore well-known landmarks, check out free museums, and ride a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished moments will arise from a little adventure!<\/p>\n

    Final thoughts before immersing yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof coat \u2013 umbrellas often don\u2019t perform well against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unconventional events \u2013 they create memorable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s common for everyone at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I begun at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
