My arrival in London was quite a lot to take in; the city seemed enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about how to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in settling down before commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new life in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re coming early or just in time for the term, here are the tips I wish I had received upon arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your housing ahead of time. I had some luck, but not everyone does. Try to find a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to circumvent lengthy commutes for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Important Daily Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you arrive, make sure to take care of these vital tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a dependable and cost-effective method to move money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire one swiftly for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus facilities, using the library, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week is key for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage; I formed strong friendships during campus explorations and society stands. This week will establish the mood for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometres across London. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to see the sights and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite intense, so it\u2019s essential to identify a cozy spot. Mine happens to be a nearby park where I unwind. The O2 is another beloved location, where I catch a film to relax. Locate your own spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, for moments of peace and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n

    Get Out and Explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining establishments. Visit iconic landmarks, enjoy free museums, and take in the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from moments of getting slightly lost.<\/p>\n

    Final Recommendations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid paying for single-use options.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in strong winds.<\/li>\n
    • Engage in unique events for unforgettable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it\u2019s a common feeling in the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
