Stepping into London for the first time can be daunting given its size, noise, and speed. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. Don’t fret if you’re in a similar boat. Here are some tips to help you adapt to London before your journey at Imperial, so you can fully appreciate the city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just on the eve of term, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First task: find accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To steer clear of expensive hotel fees, organize your accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the top spots get booked quickly. Look for a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials: must-dos<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you get to London, make sure to focus on these:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to move money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 navigating a new city is daunting without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after arriving.<\/li>\n
  • Setup a bank account \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer speedy and student-friendly options. A bank account is crucial for day-to-day payments and part-time job income.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain this promptly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The essential first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student life. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-driven clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and found great friends during campus tours and society activities. Your initial week will shape your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Smart travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. While it was unforgettable, it also felt chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount to enjoy reduced fares on Tube and bus rides.<\/p>\n

    Walking is still the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the way.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Initially, London can feel emotionally heavy. Having a favorite spot can be comforting \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I escape weekly for a movie.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own go-to places, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Dive into the city!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and place of residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee venues.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view, and meander without a set plan. Some of your fondest memories may arise from just wandering around!<\/p>\n

    Key pointers for beginning at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops frequently impose charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty rain.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they can lead to memorable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don’t stress if things feel confusing \u2013 it\u2019s a normal feeling at the outset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There’s no need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
