With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If this is your upcoming experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London life ahead of your start at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new environment.

Regardless of whether you arrive early or just before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation First

To avoid pricey hotel costs, lock in your accommodation beforehand. I was fortunate, but prime options vanish swiftly. Look for a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy journeys.

Essential Administrative Tasks

Tackle these key tasks shortly after arriving in London:

Money transfers – As an international student, seek an economical method for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Vital for navigation and staying connected. Acquire one promptly.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. An account is necessary for transactions and part-time employment.

Student ID card – This is important for utilizing campus amenities and securing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Make the Most of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week is essential for socializing and establishing the foundation for your university experience. Participate in Welcome Week events and discover clubs and societies to uncover your passions.

Even if you feel reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed close bonds through campus tours and society gatherings. This week influences your university path.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I covered nine kilometers on foot due to confusion with public transport. Sidestep this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and registering for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking still offers fantastic opportunities to uncover hidden treasures throughout the city.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel daunting, so pinpoint a comforting spot. My refuge is a nearby park where I relax daily. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another favorite hangout for movies and downtime.

Discover cafes, bookstores, or riverside benches that provide you with peace.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to dining spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish spontaneous walks around the city. Some of your cherished memories will stem from getting slightly lost.

Final Recommendations for Beginning at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to dodge charges for single-use alternatives.

Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas tend to be ineffective in windy weather.

Join unusual events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress about feeling disoriented; it’s completely normal at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and trip to Tesco at a time.

For additional insights about my journey, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London felt like a whirlwind at first, with its enormity and rapid rhythm.
