Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to relish the adventure of being a newcomer in this metropolis.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks early or just ahead of the semester kickoff, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received upon my initial arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure a living space<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To steer clear of costly hotel fees, organize your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as prime options deplete quickly. Aim to locate accommodation near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes can be tough for early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, there are a few tasks you should prioritize immediately:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 if you\u2019re an international student, seek out a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from your home nation. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • Obtaining a UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigating a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you land.<\/li>\n
  • Establishing a bank account \u2013 some banks have a requirement for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. You\u2019ll need a bank account for everyday transactions and any part-time employment.<\/li>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student life. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be reserved, attempt to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my inaugural week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable, yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more economically.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can initially feel emotionally intense. Having a comforting place is beneficial \u2013 for me, it’s the park close to my home. I go there daily to unwind. My second comfort location is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own relaxing spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and find calm.<\/p>\n

    And don\u2019t forget to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate your nearby supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eating or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your finest memories will stem from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 shops frequently impose charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective during windy weather.<\/li>\n
