Upon my first arrival in London, I perceived the city as vast and daunting. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps at hand, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to undergo a similar experience, stay calm. Here\u2019s how to acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before term starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel nights by arranging your lodging early. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not a guarantee for everyone. Seek a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: addressing crucial necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, promptly take care of these necessities:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, utilize applications like Wise or Revolut for economical transfers.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 vital for navigation and staying in touch. Acquire one soon after you land.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodate students well. Establish one for routine transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week is key for connecting with flatmates, fellow students, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society events. This week will shape your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    In the beginning, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Nonetheless, walking remains an excellent method to uncover the city\u2019s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your go-to spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense. Locate a comforting place, like a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My tranquil locations are a nearby park and the O2, where I relax weekly.<\/p>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining options. Visit renowned landmarks, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will result from enjoying a bit of serendipity.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n
