Landing in London for the first time was quite an experience. The city appeared vast, bustling, and filled with energy. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt completely lost. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here\u2019s my guidance for acclimating to London before starting at Imperial, so you can savor your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive several weeks early or just before classes begin, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your accommodation ahead of time to steer clear of pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best places disappear quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Addressing life admin: managing the essential tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, take care of these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 if you\u2019re an international student, find a trustworthy method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide good rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one right away to ensure you have data for navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and favorable for students. You\u2019ll require an account for transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is vital for access to campus, library services, and student discounts. Collect it as quickly as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is crucial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is essential. It\u2019s the time when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I made several of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. This week sets the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking is still an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense. Having a safe haven is beneficial. For me, it\u2019s the park near my residence and the O2 for weekly movie nights. Discover your own locales, whether it\u2019s a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore famous landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy unplanned strolls. Some of your best experiences will stem from getting a bit lost.<\/p>\n

    Final suggestions before immersing yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Bring a reusable bag to bypass fees on single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won\u2019t stand against the wind.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented at first; this is common.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
