Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in the same position, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new experience in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving ahead of time or just before the term begins, here\u2019s the advice I truly wished I had received.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your living arrangements early to steer clear of costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but good choices get snapped up quickly. Try to find a place near campus or close to a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Take care of these necessities shortly after you land in London:<\/p>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to delve into more than 350 student-led clubs and societies, and join those that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I found close friends during campus tours and society meetups. This week establishes the tone for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Smart Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent method to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing. Locate a comforting spot, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, where you can unwind and rejuvenate. For me, my go-to places are a nearby park and the O2 for weekly movie outings.<\/p>\n

    Get Out and Explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Discover local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished experiences will come from exploring spontaneously.<\/p>\n
