Stepping into London for the first time was an astonishing experience. The city seemed vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I felt lost on where to start. If you are about to take a similar step, fret not. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you adapt to life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the excitement of being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term begins, here are the insights I wish I had received upon landing.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options are swiftly claimed. Try to find a residence close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes can be challenging with early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of the crucial necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are several important tasks to tackle right after you arrive in London:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, it’s essential to find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having mobile data is vital for navigation, so obtain a UK SIM card and data package shortly after you land.<\/li>\n
  • Opening a bank account \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodate students well. A bank account is crucial for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this card is essential to access campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It\u2019s the perfect opportunity to meet housemates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-run clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re apprehensive, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled to understand the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London to explore. It was memorable yet hectic. Ensure you obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on Tube and bus rides.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city\u2019s culture and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense initially. Having a go-to comfort spot can help \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another favorite where I relax with a film.<\/p>\n

    Locate your own comforting spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These havens can offer essential respite.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned adventures.<\/p>\n

    Final advice before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for disposable bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas struggle against rain driven by strong winds.<\/li>\n
    • Attend quirky events \u2013 they often yield the best anecdotes.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common initial feeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
