Arriving in London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and energetic. Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, have no fear. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes begin, here\u2019s the insight I wish I had received when I got here.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Arrange your housing as soon as possible to evade costly hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best places go fast. Try to locate a residence near the campus or close to a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Essential Life Admin<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, get these essential tasks sorted promptly:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 If you’re an international student, seek a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you arrive for guidance and communication.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and welcoming to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 This card is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Get it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and participate in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to take part. I did and ended up forming some of my closest friendships during campus tours and club booths. This week sets the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Mastering London: Smart Travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my inaugural week, I walked nine kilometres across London due to misinterpretations with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can seem daunting, particularly at first. Having a cozy spot is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another location where I relax weekly while watching a film.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own comfort spots, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to rejuvenate and reset.<\/p>\n

    Get Out and Explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit around campus and your accommodation. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee haunts.<\/p>\n

    Visit well-known attractions, explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and roam without an itinerary. Some of your finest memories will arise from getting slightly lost!<\/p>\n

    Final Tips Before You Start at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 shops usually charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don’t fare well in windy conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unusual events \u2013 they lead to great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s perfectly normal initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
