Arriving in London at first was quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you are about to go through this, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s how to acclimate to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to truly relish your time in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re coming in a few weeks early or right before the term starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Housing First<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent expensive hotel accommodations by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices are snapped up swiftly. Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Vital Life Administration<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, swiftly attend to these essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, locate a trustworthy, affordable method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan right away to prevent getting lost without navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time employment payments.<\/li>\n

    Even if you\u2019re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Travel Wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I didn\u2019t grasp the Tube or buses, so I walked nine kilometers across London to explore. While it was unforgettable, it\u2019s not advisable. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking continues to be the most effective way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the way.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Safe Havens<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense at first. Having a go-to spot helps \u2013 mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie each week.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own comfort locations, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can recharge and relax.<\/p>\n

    Explore the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with frequently visited neighborhoods surrounding campus and home. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favored food or coffee venues.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the views, and roam without a strategy. Some of your best moments will arise from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof coat \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective against rain driven by wind.<\/li>\n
    • Join unconventional events \u2013 they often lead to the best stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I arrived at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
