Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to genuinely appreciate the excitement of being new in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead of time or just on the verge of the term starting, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Locate Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To avoid spending a fortune on hotels, secure your living arrangements early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime choices are often snatched up quickly. Seek a location near campus or close to a dependable Tube line, as extended commutes can be challenging for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key Life Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon reaching London, tackle these crucial tasks without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method for sending money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM Card \u2013 Navigating without data can be tricky. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.<\/li>\n<li>Bank Account \u2013 Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID Card \u2013 This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It&#8217;s the opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for the ones that pique your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you are introverted, encourage yourself to engage. I did, and I made some of my closest friendships during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the framework for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Navigate London Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my initial week, I had little understanding of the Tube or buses, so I walked nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic but unforgettable\u2014don\u2019t repeat my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheaper travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, walking remains the best way to experience the city&#8217;s culture. You\u2019ll uncover hidden treasures simply by meandering.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel overwhelming at first. Having a familiar place can be comforting\u2014mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, located just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly to relax.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own favorite hangout like a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas offer necessary respite and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee spots.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for scenic views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will come from unintentionally getting lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Last-minute Tips Before Joining Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren&#8217;t very effective in strong winds.<\/li>\n<li>Attend unusual activities \u2013 they make for great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you\u2019re feeling disoriented \u2013 everyone feels that way at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial.
