Stepping into London was initially quite daunting for me. The city felt immense, noisy, and teeming with activity. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I experienced a sense of disorientation. If you find yourself in a comparable situation, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, so you can relish the adventure of being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks early or just ahead of the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To steer clear of costly hotel charges, arrange your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime choices get booked up quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of essential matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, tackle these crucial tasks without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having mobile data is essential for navigation, so get a UK SIM card with data soon after reaching.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-oriented. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as feasible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial. It\u2019s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be reserved, motivate yourself to join in. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus orientations and society stalls. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was memorable yet hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to absorb the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your soothing spaces<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the outset. Having a comforting location is beneficial. For me, it\u2019s the park close to my home where I go daily to unwind. The O2, located just 10 minutes away, is another comforting venue where I watch films weekly.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own comforting spots, whether it be a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with the areas around campus and your home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks and spend your weekends discovering the city. Visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and roam freely. Some of your fondest experiences will arise from a little wandering!<\/p>\n

    Final tips before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Get a reusable shopping bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often fail against strong winds.<\/li>\n
    • Embrace unique events \u2013 they lead to memorable tales.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone experiences this initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You aren\u2019t expected to have everything sorted from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
