The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re about to embark on this journey, don\u2019t stress. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before beginning your time at Imperial, so you can embrace your new city life.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive weeks before classes or just days prior, here\u2019s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure a place to live<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prevent expensive hotel bills by securing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t. The best places fill up fast! Search for housing close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative tasks: must-dos<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019re in London, take care of these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a reliable and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigation. Get a UK SIM card with a data plan soon after arriving.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 some banks ask for a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are quick and suit students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job income.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The significance of your first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s when you meet flatmates, fellow students, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that interest you.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re timid, make an effort to join in. I did, and I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Travel wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Throughout my first week, I struggled to figure out the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses affordably.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. Discover hidden treasures by meandering around.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can initially feel emotionally intense. A comfort location is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park. I go there daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie each week.<\/p>\n<p>Locate your own comfort zones, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These environments can be more helpful than you think.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover the city!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll visit frequently around campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and go-to food or coffee shops.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks. Dedicate your weekends to discovering your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from a little adventure!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Last-minute tips before beginning Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops commonly charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t fare well in strong winds.<\/li>\n<li>Partake in unique events \u2013 they provide great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone does initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial.
