Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

Whether you arrive ahead of time or just in time for the term to start, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging your living situation beforehand. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. Seek accommodation close to campus or along a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative necessities

When you arrive, take care of these important items:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. You will require an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged lasting friendships during campus exploration and society gatherings. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

Initially, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Don’t follow in my footsteps. Acquire a Student Oyster card and eligible for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Nevertheless, walking remains a superb way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures.

Discover your go-to spots

London can feel like a lot to handle. Identify a comforting location, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My preferred places are a nearby park and the O2, where I relax with a movie.

Wander the city

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost.

Last-minute advice before immersing in Imperial life

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use alternatives.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Attend unique events for unforgettable anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a common feeling at first.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To delve deeper into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London was intimidating; the city appeared vast, noisy, and incredibly fast.
