Arriving in London for the first time was a bit much. The city seemed vast, noisy, and fast-paced. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don\u2019t worry. Here\u2019s how to prepare for your new life in London before you begin at Imperial, so you can savor your time in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you land weeks ahead or just before the term starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by sorting out your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune since the best options are snatched up quickly. Look for a place close to your campus or an accessible Tube line to minimize commute times for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Once you’re in London, tackle these key essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and any part-time employment.<\/li>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, make an effort to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Travel wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but disorganized. Obtain your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount for lower travel costs. Walking remains a fantastic method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a go-to place can help. Mine is a nearby park where I visit daily for some relaxation. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I de-stress with a weekly movie. Identify your own havens, like a caf\u00e9 or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from taking a few wrong turns.<\/p>\n
