Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London before you embark on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you get here weeks in advance or just moments before the term begins, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of expensive hotel rates by organizing your lodging well in advance. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The top choices disappear quickly, so aim to secure a residence close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Life admin: getting the basics sorted<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019re in London, make sure to tackle these necessities without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective means to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 without data, navigating a new surroundings can be challenging. Acquire a UK SIM card with data soon after you arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and geared towards students. Set up an account for everyday spending and part-time job income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this provides you access to campus locations, the library, and student discounts. Make sure to pick it up as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your initial week at Imperial is significant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week at Imperial is crucial for your experience as a student. It\u2019s the time when you meet your flatmates, classmates, and future pals. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I made that effort and ended up meeting some of my closest companions during campus tours and society booths. Your first week really sets the stage for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel smart<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p> &lt;pDuring my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers throughout London. It was a memorable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to use the Tube and buses at a lower cost.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally intense, particularly in the beginning. Having a comforting place is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s the park near my home. I visit every day to recharge. My second favorite location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to relax.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your personal comfort areas, whether it\u2019s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river. Such spaces are essential for your relaxation and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Get out and explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and home. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred spots for meals or coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific destination. Some of your most memorable moments will stem from a little bit of wandering!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final pointers before diving into student life at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtain a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often fail in windy weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Participate in unique events \u2013 they can lead to great stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a normal feeling initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s no need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re viewing this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial.
