Upon my initial arrival in London, the city appeared vast, noisy, rapid, and somewhat daunting. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to face this, don’t fret. Here\u2019s my guidance to help you acclimate to life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban adventure.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here\u2019s the guidance I wished I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure a place to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent costly hotel expenses by organizing accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t, as the top choices fill up swiftly. Try to find a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes to early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, take care of these essentials promptly:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy, economical method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better conversion rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one right away to avoid being stranded without data in a new locale.<\/li>\n
  • Opening a bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is the most significant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is critical for your student journey. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that capture your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I made close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. Your initial week establishes the atmosphere for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Avoid my error. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus rides.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can initially feel emotionally taxing. A favorite spot helps \u2013 mine is the park near my home, where I visit daily to unwind. My second location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax weekly with a film.<\/p>\n

    Find your own favorite areas, whether a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or bench by the river. These spaces are priceless for relaxation and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with key areas around campus and your residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee establishments.<\/p>\n

    Visit iconic landmarks, roam free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for sightseeing, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will stem from losing your way!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective in the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Embrace unconventional events \u2013 they yield the best stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s typical at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need everything sorted out on the first day. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
