If you are about to experience this, don’t despair. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you appreciate the city.

Whether you get here early or just before the semester starts, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

**First and foremost: secure your living arrangement**

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Target a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early morning classes.

**Essential tasks: organizing the important basics**

Upon arriving in London, address these crucial matters:

– Currency transfers: International students require economical options for transferring funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
– UK SIM card: Acquire one right away for data usage and navigation in a new city.
– Bank account: Digital banks like Monzo or Starling allow for quick setups and are friendly to students. Open an account for daily expenses and payments from part-time jobs.
– Student ID card: This allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it without delay.

**The initial week at Imperial is pivotal**

Your first week is essential for meeting flatmates, classmates, and new friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

**Getting around London: travel wisely**

At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Instead, get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city’s secret treasures.

**Identify your safe havens**

London can feel emotionally intense. Discover a comforting location, like a nearby park or a preferred spot, to relax. It could be a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside seat. These environments can aid in your relaxation and mental reset.

**And remember to venture out!**

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite eateries. Explore renowned landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your greatest memories will form while wandering a little off course.

**Last pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life**

– Utilize a reusable bag to save on single-use bag charges.
– Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas struggle against the wind.
– Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
– Don’t stress if you initially feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you are already ahead of where I started. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

**To learn more about my experiences,** [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially quite daunting, due to its size and rapid pace.
