Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, boisterous, and filled with a rapid pace of life. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about my starting point. If you\u2019re on the verge of this experience, there\u2019s no need for concern. Here\u2019s how to get your new life in London set up properly before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your fresh start in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving several weeks early or just before classes start, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To dodge high hotel costs, book a place to stay well in advance. I happened to be lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone, as the best choices tend to disappear quickly. Look for somewhere close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After arriving in London, promptly handle these important tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective solution for transferring funds from your home country. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 vital for accessing data and navigating in an unfamiliar place. Obtain one soon after you arrive.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks may need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Establish an account to manage daily expenditures and receive payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it at the earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re feeling shy, make an effort to join in. I did and forged close friendships during campus tours and at society booths. Your first week sets the precedent for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube and bus systems, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an experience to remember but a bit hectic. Be sure to get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to enjoy the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite emotionally taxing. Having a comfy spot can be beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is another place I visit weekly to catch a movie.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own comfort areas, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019re likely to frequent around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus for a great view, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Last-minute tips before you dive into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Get a reusable shopping bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t hold up well in the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in quirky events \u2013 they can lead to memorable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t panic if you feel a bit lost at first \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out right on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already further ahead than I was when I began at Imperial \u2013 so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco stop at a time.<\/p>\n
