Initially, reaching London was quite daunting due to its vastness, noise, and rapid pace. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt lost regarding where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need for concern. Here are some tips to help you acclimatize to London before beginning your studies at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city.<\/p>\n
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes start, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n
First on the agenda: secure accommodation<\/p>\n
Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not always the case. The most desirable accommodations vanish swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to early classes.<\/p>\n
Administrative tasks: organizing essential necessities<\/p>\n
Upon arriving in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n
– Money transfers: As an international student, seek a dependable, cost-effective method to send money. Apps like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
\n– UK SIM card: Navigating a new city is challenging without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
\n– Bank account: Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick, student-friendly options. Set up an account for daily spending and part-time job income.
\n– Student ID card: This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
The initial week at Imperial is crucial<\/p>\n
Your first week at Imperial is of utmost importance. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re shy, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships while on campus tours and visiting society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n
Getting around London: travel wisely<\/p>\n
During my first week, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers to explore. It was unforgettable but rather chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically. Walking remains an excellent method to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n
Identify your comfort zones<\/p>\n
London can feel emotionally taxing at first. Having a go-to comfort spot is beneficial. For me, it\u2019s a local park and the O2, where I take time to relax weekly. Discover your own spaces, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n
And remember to explore!<\/p>\n
Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and relish spontaneous city strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit aimlessly.<\/p>\n
Final pieces of advice before diving into student life at Imperial<\/p>\n
– Obtain a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use bags.
\n– Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don\u2019t hold up well in wind.
\n– Participate in unique events; they create wonderful stories.
\n– Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented; it\u2019s perfectly normal at the beginning.<\/p>\n
You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I stood when I started at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
