Stepping foot in London for the first time was a whirlwind due to its enormity and rapid rhythm. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re about to face this, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London before embarking on your journey at Imperial, so you can take full advantage of everything the city has in store.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re landing weeks in advance or just prior to the semester kicking off, here\u2019s the advice I wished I\u2019d received when I first landed.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent costly hotel stays by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options disappear quickly. Aim for a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: addressing necessary requirements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, focus on these priorities:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a reliable and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 procure one without delay to ensure you have data for navigation in a fresh environment.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The first week at Imperial is essential for your student experience. Connect with your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-operated clubs and societies and enroll in activities that catch your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society stands. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my inaugural week, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up covering nine kilometers on foot across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses at a low cost.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the finest method to experience the city and its culture. Unearth hidden treasures by strolling around.<\/p>\n

    Establish your relaxing spaces<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing at first. Identifying a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a park close to home where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another place I frequent weekly for a film.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own relaxation spots, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, a bookstore, or a bench by the river. These areas are priceless for unwinding and recharging.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Tour iconic sites, check out complimentary museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the view, and meander without an agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off course!<\/p>\n

    Final recommendations before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Acquire a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t reliable against wind.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone experiences that initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and start your London adventure, one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
